Can I get a refund on a buy-now-pay-later purchase?
How the refund flow works
A buy-now-pay-later plan involves three parties: the store, the lender and you. When you return an item, the store usually sends the refund to the lender, which then credits your plan. Until that credit posts, you may still see scheduled payments on your calendar.
Read the agreement for how refunds and missed payments are handled, since the terms decide what happens next. Lenders often have their own app or account page that shows pending credits.
What to do while you wait
Keep the return receipt and tracking number, and note the date the store received the item. Ask the lender to pause or adjust upcoming payments if a refund is pending. Missing a payment can affect your account, so check the schedule before each due date.
Check whether the lender charges a fee for returns or early payoff before you decide how to proceed.
When a refund is partial
Some purchases include restocking fees, shipping charges or a nonrefundable service fee. Those amounts can reduce the credit you receive, and the lender may show the difference as a separate line. Review the breakdown before assuming something went wrong.
Common mistakes
- Assuming the store's refund automatically cancels the plan's future payments.
- Skipping the return receipt and then having no proof the item came back.
